In Durham, there is a village called Great Lumley. South and West of Great Lumley village there is a thick Main Five quarter and High Main coal seams. The thinner intervening coals have been extracted in several surface mining operations. Currently more than 700, 000 tonnes of coal are being obtained from the High Main seam at Priors Close North surface mining site, this is where in July 1997 a large tree fossil was found embedded in sandstone.
